The imagePROGRAF GP-6600S is the bigger brother to the larger Canon GP-4600S large format printer. The Canon GP-6600S can produce prints up to 60 inches wide on roll or sheet media. Both of these Canon imagePROGRAF GP series printers feature the LUCIA PRO II 7-color inkset consisting of a the standard primary colors and grays as well as an orange ink for widening color gamut to cover 96% of the Pantone Solid Coated formula guide. These printers are ideal for printing bright, saturated prints and posters on banner material, photo paper, bond paper, and others. From a competitive standpoint, the inkset on the GP-4600S would most closely compare to the Epson SureColor P8570 44-inch printer. However, based on the size of the printer, it would have to be compared the Epson P20570 64-inch printer.
Canon printers differ from Epson printers in that they have end-user replaceable printheads. Epson utilizes piezo inkjet printheads and Canon uses thermal printheads. Epson’s heads are considered part of the hardware and are meant to last for years of printing. Canon’s thermal printheads are considered a consumable and need to be replaced periodically (depends on how many prints you generate). So, when the printhead finally fails, you can purchase a new Canon printhead (PF-10) and replace it yourself in a matter of minutes. If an Epson printhead fails, it is a service call to have a professional technician replace the head. If the printer is in warranty, then all costs are covered, if not, then you’re out of pocket for the Epson printhead and service.
The printer comes with a full set of 330ml ink cartridges to get the it up and running and producing lots of prints. Canon GP-6600S ink cartridges come in three different size options that you can choose from depending on your production needs (number and size of prints you make per week). Choose from the standard 160ml size if you’re only doing a few prints per week. If you’re doing lots of printing (several a day) choose the larger 700ml cartridges. If you’re producing somewhere in between, you can go with the 330ml cartridges. The larger the cartridge, the lower the cost per ml and you can mix and match sizes if you typically use certain colors more than others.

The Canon GP-6600S comes with a ton of different software applications to make it easy to print and manage your large format printer. Included are Mac & Windows print drivers, poster artist design software, a media configuration tool, accounting manager to report ink and paper use, and much more. You can also add a RIP option to make the Canon printer postscript compatible. One of our favorite, affordable print software solutions is Mirage, which allows you to nest, step and repeat, layout, color manage, create picture packages and much more.
