What is the HP Latex 830 (870B9A)?

The HP Latex 830 is the 3 L-cartridge model of HP’s 730/830 production line: a 64-inch printer using water-based HP Latex Inks in eight 3 L HP 873 cartridges that HP says you can change while the printer runs, with eight printheads and an HP Embedded Spectrophotometer. HP rates high-speed banner (4-pass) output at up to 387 ft²/hr and rolls run from 16.5 to 64 in wide. DTG in Tampa, FL sells it for high-volume sign and display shops. White ink is on the HP Latex 830 W.

HP Latex 830: overview

HP’s speed ratings for the 830 are 387 ft²/hr in high-speed banner (4-pass), 269 ft²/hr in 6-pass speed mode, 215 ft²/hr in standard (8-pass), 183 ft²/hr in quality (12-pass) and 118 ft²/hr in high quality (16-pass), at up to 1200 x 1200 dpi. (HP’s US series page rounds the high-speed banner figure to 388 ft²/hr.) The HP 873 cartridges are 3 L each, which HP positions as a way to help reduce running costs.

The 830 takes one roll from 16.5 to 64 in wide (23 to 64 in with full support), up to 121 lb and 9.8 in in diameter. HP lists a 644 lb printer, a 101.7 x 34.1 x 55.2 in footprint and a 960 lb shipping weight (not confirmed in HP’s published guide). The box includes a Beacon accessory, which the 730 box does not list.

How the HP Latex 830 differs from the 730 and the 830 W

Compared with the HP Latex 730, the 830 uses 3 L HP 873 cartridges instead of 1 L HP 832, lists a 387 ft²/hr high-speed banner (4-pass) rating instead of 334 ft²/hr, takes rolls from 16.5 in instead of 18 in, and weighs 644 lb instead of 575 lb. Compared with the HP Latex 830 W, it has no white ink: eight printheads and eight cartridges against ten printheads and nine cartridges. If you need neither an embedded spectrophotometer nor 3 L cartridges, the lighter HP Latex 630 family is the alternative.
