Q. What previous model printer, if any, does the Epson S8170 replace? A. The S8170 replaces the Epson SureColor S60600 Printer.
Q. How does the Epson SureColor S8170 differ from the Epson S60600 printer? A. There are several differences but we will highlight the main ones here: 1 – Look and design is completely different from the S60 more closely resembling the compact & efficient Epson S9170. 2 – The S8170 now features a 6-color print engine adding light cyan and light magenta compared to the S60’s CMYK (4-color) only inkset. 3 – Over 20% faster in comparable print modes vs the S60. 4 – Choose from larger ink capacities at either 800ml or 1500ml, lowering your cost per ml for ink.
Q. Where would you position the S8170 among the three different eco-solvent printers that Epson offers? A. From a price standpoint the S8170 fits right in between of the S7170 and S9170. From a production standpoint, the SureColor S8170 is the fastest of the 3 printers offering speeds up to over 1000 sq.ft per hour. It is more than twice as fast as the S7170. From a print quality standpoint, the S8170 falls in between the S7170 and S9170. The 6-color inkset from the S8170 offers slightly wider color gamut and smoother transitions (gradients and highlight detail) than the S7170. However, the S8170 does not have the color gamut (or range of colors) that the S9170 offers with its 10-color (plus optional white) inkset.

The Epson SureColor S8170 printer uses the 6-Color Epson Ultrachrome GS3 Inkset featuring light cyan and light magenta which offers incredible color gamut from a 6-color inkset. It also offers a smoother and more continuous tone looking print because of the lighter colors “blending” in the highlights and transitions. They come in two different sizes depending on your printing volume and budget needs. Choose from 800ml ink packs or if you are printing more frequently, 1500ml ink packs.
You’ll notice that if you look into the “What’s in the Box” section that the Epson S8170 comes with 2 different RIP options to choose from. Epson’s Edge Print Pro is a “permanent” license meaning the version it ships with will continue to work with the computer its installed on. It features all the basic features you need to produce high quality prints on the printer. The Onyx GO RIP included will last 1-year from the date that you install it and features basic and many advanced features when printing to the S8170. DTG offers a trade-in program of the Onyx Go RIP to an Onyx Thrive which features even more advanced options. Finally, while not supported at the time of release, we are sure that the Mirage software will also drive the S8170 eventually. Please consult with your sales rep from DTG for options.
