Epson printer problems on Mac OSX, GIMP

If you are having problems with printing to an Epson 4000, 7600, 9600, or 10600 from Macintosh OSX than it's possible that the system is using Apple's "gimp" driver and not Epson's driver (the correct driver). Symptoms of the gimp driver include bad color, low quality, and inconsistent results.

To verify that your system is using the correct driver and not the gimp driver, launch the Printer Setup Utility application located in your Applications/Utilities folder. Look at the line containing your Epson printer and then look at the "Kind" column description. Make sure it begins with the word Epson. If you see anything else like CUPS or Gimp in the description then the system is using the incorrect driver.

At this point you need to uninstall the GIMP drivers. You can download the uninstall program at this location.... http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3

The program is called gimp-print-uninstaller-1.1.dmg. Download it and run the uninstaller. This will remove the gimp drivers from your Mac. Reboot your Macintosh and then launch the printer setup utility. Click the add printer button and in the top drop-down box make sure you select the appropriate connection type you are using, i.e. Epson USB, Epson TCP/IP, etc. You should now see your Epson printer in the list and you can now add the driver. This will install the appropriate Epson driver and you will now be printing with success. If you have any questions you can contact support at www.dtgweb.com.

  • This procedure can also be used for Epson's non "professional" printers including the r800, 1280, and 2200 printers.

  • Also, in OSX 10.3 and greater the GIMP unistaller is included in the operating system so you don't have to download it from the gimp url.

  • Thank you! It also works on the epson stylus photo 1200!

  • This also works to restore the function that let's you see ink levels on an Epson 880i model.

  • I have not been able to figure out how to print to Epson CX4600 connected to a print server (or as shared printer connected to a Microsoft XP Pro machine). This printer does not show up in the Mac OSX panther Print Setup utility.

  • I have exactly the same problem except for my printer being on XP Home. After repeated attempts at downloading the driver and reinstalling it, the CX4600 simply does not show up on the list.

  • Having similar problems with an epson cx6400. When adding a printer in the printer utility menu on Mac OS 10.3, you can see the printer in the list but it has an error message at the bottom of the window stating the drivers are not installed. I surmise that the problem is the downloaded drivers from the epson web site only work for macs up to OS 10.2 and not for 10.3 or higher. I lost the original cd. I think that the cd would probably work where the downloads don't. Also suspect that if the downloaded drivers were installed on an OS 10.2 computer, then that computer was upgraded to 10.3 or higher, you would not have any problems. Any confirmations of my theories or any solutions to my problem would be appreciated.

  • I am having problems with the Epson R1800 using 10.4.2 on a Power mac G4 connected to a Win 2000 Server with and HP5 and R1800 printer installed, working to other win clients and shared. It worked OK on 10.1.5. I get the Gimp options to choose but when I select the R1800 it defaults back to Postscript.

  • Hi,

I have an Epson 1290 printer and use an apple mac on OSX.
I am having problems when printing.
Half way through, the printer would just stop printing and says job stopped when I have done nothing to stop it.
    I am printing from InDesign.

Any ideas or solutions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • Under Mac OS 10.4.3, with the Stylus
Photo 1200 driver (for 10.2) installed, the
    Printer Utility window always reads
Jobs Stopped. When I select Start
    Jobs, the Utility immediately reverts
to Jobs Stopped again and printing
cannot take place. Is there a way
    out of the cycle?
    Thanks in advance:
    Alec

  • I'm having smiliar problems as some of you have described: printing from InDesign to my Epson 1290 (super A3 size paper) the printing process suddenly cuts short halfway through. The print queu is left empty as if the print job was executed properly - which it didn't.

I've checked the issue of GIMP-thingy, but it appears my system is using the correct driver.

Does anyone has anytip on what to do?

  • I had exactly the same problem with an Epson 2100 on Mac OS 10.4.6. After weeks of misery and useless so-called 'support' from Mac, Adobe and Epson, I uninstalled the printer driver and reinstalled it (again - has already doen this twice). On the recommendation of a fellow sufferer, I did this FOUR times more. After the 4th re-install the problem disappeared and has not reappeared since (6 months). Seems there is no science to this, but try it, it worked for me & at least one other.

  • I have an Epson R2400 and a problem in that when I create a new custom paper size with NO borders, the print dialogue box always says 'roll paper' and won't print when I use a sheet of paper. Such a pain! If I leave default margins, the roll paper designation doesn't appear, but then I can't print borderless! Anyone know if Epson recognises this problem? Thanks, Peter (ph@zen.co.uk)

  • I'm trying to print on roll paper on an epson stylus pro 4000 on Mac OSX.

I have a number of photos forming a panorama that need to be printed at 42cm wide x 1.5m long. I have no problem printing each image as an individual print at 42x42 cm (files size about 79Mb. When I gang them up in one file to be 42cm wide x 1.5m long (about 450Mb) then the fun begins. The printer starts working but rather than print the entire image it seems to select a random part of one of the photos and starts to print it at about 20cm wide. I cancel the print run at this point to save paper. Am I doing something wrong or is supposed to do this?

  • Regarding Alex's dilemma:
"Under Mac OS 10.4.3, with the Stylus
Photo 1200 driver (for 10.2) installed, the
    Printer Utility window always reads
Jobs Stopped... Is there a way
    out of the cycle?
    Alec"

I have the same symptom (Jobs Stopped) under OSX 10.4.8 with my Epson Stylus Color 740 (which worked fine under OSX 10.2 and Classic). Using either the Epson 740 or the Gimp 740 driver supplied with 10.4.8, the jobs will spool but fail to print. I have the same problem printing from all applications including the basic TexEdit and Preview apps). I've reinstalled OSX a couple different ways. I've repaired file permissions in Disk Utility, and reset the printers in Printer Setup, countless times.

I see nothing at Apple's web site that covers this, nor have I found a solution through Google. There are scattered appeals for help (like Alec's above) and various suggestions, but nothing has worked for me.
